"Who is behind the Libyan Mafia profiles? Now we must investigate fully'

The GIP of the Court of Modena contradicts the Prime Minister: the investigation into the threats against Don Mattia Ferrari must continue.

Mediterranea Saving Humans calls for light to be shed on the disturbing intertwining of the power apparatuses in Libya and Italy, which are active in promoting the violation of human rights.

The decision by the GIP of Modena to allow the investigation to continue, or rather to begin in earnest, into the threats made against our Don Mattia Ferrari by obscure powers - Libyan and Italian - is good news.

Every now and then there is a judge who does his job, even if it means contradicting his colleagues and trying to undermine the impunity enjoyed by the powerful.

We often refer to the 'Libyan mafia' as the complex web of warlords, oil, arms, drug and even human traffickers, and the 'new' institutional political notables who took over institutional representation in Libya after the 2011 war.

After the Gaddafi era, Tripolitania and Cyrenaica, according to the most classical model of spheres of influence, were both taken away from democracy and the Libyan people and are now in the hands of bandits who do business mainly with the West, but also with Putin's Russia. The recent grandiose visit of General Haftar, who was received in Rome with all the honours, testifies to the absolute lack of any reasonable scruples on the part of European and Italian governments to make pacts even with those who, until yesterday, were denounced as dictators in the service of Wagner and the autocrat of Moscow. Spheres of influence are rolling from one side to the other, enriching the powerful on both sides with millions.

To what end? To stop, by any means and with any horror, women, men and children migrants, to close their mouths in a lager or at the bottom of the sea before they can land on our shores with their dreams and hopes.

Whoever threatened Don Mattia from Libya is not an individual, but an organisation. From Italy and from Libya, which certainly has accomplices and probably even directors in Italy. It is no coincidence that he has confidential documents that only someone in the Italian security apparatus could have given him. He is under constant surveillance on behalf of the warlords who have taken over the government of Tripolitania, made up of figures such as Mr Trebelsi, the current Minister of the Interior, who has already been described by the United Nations as "one of the worst criminals". And the power of these figures, who also travel around Europe thanks to their diplomatic immunity and their services to the governments of the Union, goes so far as to prevent them from even being investigated by the Italian courts.

And for an honest judge to implicitly confirm this by deciding to investigate and not to cover up is good news. Who is behind the accounts from which the threats against Don Mattia originate? Who is providing the confidential documents from Italy? What is the relationship between the person threatening the human rights defender and the men of the Italian secret services in Libya? These are all questions that the investigators - and those who are honest and not corrupt or paved - should ask themselves in order to leave history with a shred of truth.

Don Mattia already has the protection of an entire community, a very large one: the Christian one, which mixes with the secular one, like ours, to do what is right, both at sea and on land.

Threats, however, can be an opportunity to tear away the veil of hypocrisy and impunity with which governments and institutions cover up their criminal acts against thousands of innocent people.

Don Mattia has also made available to all good people the hatred of which he is a victim, like so many who challenge power. Let us use this hatred, these threats, to help those who have no voice, who are raped, tortured, murdered in the name of 'political stability'. They are the real victims.

And that Pontius Pilate, or worse, is not the model to follow is indeed good news for justice.
