Yesterday, 19 July, the International Court of Justice declared Israeli settlements in the Occupied Territories of the West Bank illegal and reaffirmed Israel's obligation to end the occupation, to evacuate the current settlements as soon as possible and to cease its aggressive and violent policy in the Occupied Territories.
Also yesterday, Israeli settlers brutally attacked several Palestinians near the village of Sheab al Botom, in full view of Israeli soldiers who did not intervene to stop the violence. A settler occupied a Palestinian family's land with his herd, destroying the young olive trees.
When the owner showed his land title and tried to chase away the sheep that were destroying his crops, settlers with their faces covered and armed with clubs attacked the Palestinian homes.
Wahab, 55, was hit several times in the head as she tried to defend another member of her family who was being attacked. Both were taken to hospital with their injuries.
Instead of stopping the attack, a soldier fired shots to disperse the people who had come to the aid of the attacked family. A number of Palestinians were then arrested by the occupation forces.
This is the Israeli occupation in the West Bank: aggression, violence and illegal arrests by settlers with the complicity of the army and police against those who simply want to live on their land. The Netanyahu government's support for these actions allows the aggressors to go unpunished and continue their criminal acts and human rights violations against the Palestinian people on a daily basis.
Several international activists, including one from Mediterranea Saving Humans, were present in Masafer Yatta with the Mediterranea with Palestine project, in collaboration with Operazione Colomba and alongside the Youth of Sumud, to carry out non-violent interventions and document the daily human rights violations.
