Dead Bija. Human trafficker. Worked with the Italian government.

Last night, all the agencies announced the assassination in Tripoli of 'Bija', the trafficker and senior officer of the so-called Libyan coastguard.

Bija, wanted internationally for crimes against humanity, was living proof of the collusion between the Italian government, both present and past, and the major traffickers of people, arms, drugs and oil. The fact that Bija was a high-ranking officer in what is called the 'coastguard', but in reality is a front for the transfer of millions of euros from Italy to Libya, needed to pay for the dirty work of intercepting at sea, deporting and detaining thousands of migrant women, men and children, is not even mentioned in the agency's reports. They describe this exponent of the Zawhya militia as he appears in the numerous investigations, including by the Hague Court, but then say nothing about the fact that he was one of the recipients of money and resources provided by Italy. His photographs on board Italian patrol boats are striking.

And so, for those of us who knew Bija through the stories of the migrants we had on board, who told us of the torture, the rape, the suffering he was capable of inflicting on other people, it is not his violent death that is the issue. Gangsters, mafia bosses, are usually eliminated in this way. And someone will take his place, and it will be no better than he was. The issue for us is how is it possible that this country, our country, does not immediately stop and call the Prime Minister, Minister Piantedosi, to account for these deals with the mafias of traffickers and torturers. How is it possible that a Parliament like the Italian Parliament does not bat an eyelid when it sees these things? Indeed. Piantedosi, a man who 'systematically works' on the deportation of human beings, forbidden by the Geneva Convention, claims his 'successes'. Now that Bija is dead, they will certainly have to replace him. But this world is unfortunately full of butchers.

But they are not asking us to 'collaborate' with these friends of theirs. We do not collaborate with those who torture, kill, rape and make millions from the business of refoulement. If Piantedosi punishes us for not collaborating with the bandits, it is a badge of honour for us.
