Five people were detained, including a pregnant woman and Hafez Huraini, the historic leader of nonviolent resistance. The army also stormed the village Guest House, breaking down the door. Inside were four activists from Mediterranea and Operazione Colomba.
During the past night, around 12:30 AM local time, the Israeli army carried out a violent raid in the village of Tuwani, in Masafer Yatta, in the south of the occupied West Bank. This is where the project Mediterranea With Palestine is active, and where Oscar-winning filmmaker Basel Adra lives — he is currently in Italy presenting No Other Land.
During the raid, five people were detained, including a pregnant woman and Hafez Huraini, a historic leader of nonviolent resistance in Masafer Yatta. Blindfolded and handcuffed, they were only released after several hours. The army also stormed the village Guest House, breaking down the door. Inside were four activists from Mediterranea and Operazione Colomba, who were threatened and identified. A Palestinian car was also damaged.
"We saw a village terrified, invaded by the army without any reason. Some people were literally kidnapped for a few hours. The use of terror is a weapon employed daily by the Israeli Occupation," said Lina, an activist of Mediterranea.
"The soldiers broke down the door and entered the Guest House. Their faces were covered, and they gave no explanation. Their only intent was to intimidate us," added Gio, one of the Operazione Colomba volunteers.
Despite the signing of the Trump-Netanyahu agreement, events like last night's are hardly consistent with any vision of peace. While a ceasefire has finally been reached in Gaza, the Israeli government's ethnic cleansing project continues — and seems to be accelerating daily — in the West Bank. The Netanyahu administration has openly stated its goal of annexing almost all of the occupied Palestinian Territories into the State of Israel.
The operation in Tuwani last night is neither an isolated nor rare event: just in the past week, the Israeli army has carried out military operations in the nearby cities of Yatta and Hebron.
This is why Mediterranea Saving Humans is present in Masafer Yatta with the Mediterranea With Palestine project: to carry out nonviolent protective actions for the Palestinian population, and to document and denounce, on a daily basis, the crimes committed by the Israeli Occupation.
"Armed, masked civilians and public officials enter the homes of ordinary people, guests, and religious figures in the community. They do not identify themselves, nor do they provide any reason. They detain, intimidate, and terrorize an entire village for hours. Since the signing of the latest agreement, we have witnessed an intensification of violence and actions by the Israeli occupation," emphasized Damiano Censi, coordinator of the Mediterranea With Palestine project.
