THE ITALIAN PORTS ARE OPEN – THANKS TO SYRACUSE AND ITS MAYOR – IMMEDIATE DISEMBARKMENT FOR THE 47 SHIPWRECKED ON BOARD OF SEA-WATCH 3

Last night, Sea-Watch 3 entered the port of Santa Pelagia Bay, north of Syracuse, without any problem and is now anchored there. Thanks to the initiative of civil society, the city of Syracuse and its mayor Francesco Italia, it is clear to all that the territorial waters and the Italian ports are not “closed” at all – as some government propaganda had repeatedly suggested in recent months like a broken record. Instead, they are open routes of humanity. It could not be otherwise according to maritime, international and Italian law.

MEDITERRANEA now demands that, in strict compliance with the law of the sea, the Italian government assigns to Sea-Watch 3 the port of Syracuse as POS (Place of Safety) and immediately authorises the DISEMBARKMENT of the 47 shipwrecked and rescued people who have been on board for one week.

MEDITERRANEA recalls in this regard that among these people there are also at least eight unaccompanied minors and WARNS the government against taking any action that may be detrimental to their subjective rights.

MEDITERRANEA informs that she has already given a mandate to her lawyers to carefully monitor the development of the situation and to report to the Judicial Authority any conduct in conflict with the current legal framework.

MEDITERRANEA is now present in Syracuse with its own delegation, in support of the initiatives of the mayor and civil society, and invites everyone to a permanent MOBILISATION to support the request for immediate disembarkation of the 47 people on board of Sea-Watch 3.
